SuperSport United got to its end in this season’s Absa Premiership. The Premier Soccer League is just about done and there are few games left to be played. Matsatsantsa is currently 11 points behind the PSL results log leader, Kaizer Chiefs.
The thing is, they played two games more than most of their rivals but still have nearly 30 points to play for. The United’s stalwart, Ronwen Williams have declared that this is the end of their journey – for this season. The championship will continue as a battle between just four teams.
SuperSport United has a problem with mentality
United’s side had to face many league defeats which are by Williams, just a part of the reason they backed up from the entire competition. It has become impossible to manage anymore. The Bafana Bafana shot-stopper had a tendency to slam his teammate’s mentality regarding their failure. It helped them to wake up and encouraged the hat trick of league titles under Gavin Hunt.
“At this moment, no. It is the same story again and the same problem; we beat the Pirates, we beat Chiefs and we are unstoppable against big teams. However, the struggle for lower teams is almost unbelievable. At the beginning of the season, we had clear goals for ourselves to win the cup but the main target was the league. We know we are far, far away from it now.”
“In the league, our last three games were lost on the bounce and that is unlike SuperSport. However, it is again the same story about mentality. We tried to speak about it but we need to change this. When we play the best, top teams, the guys are more motivated and lower teams do the same as they consider us the top team.”
“For that particular reason, we need to be as one of the top teams. We need to show those teams that there is a reason they are down there and not at our level. That is the mentality we need to bring into the team. This kind of mentality we had when Daine Klate and Gavin Hunt were here. When they won titles, they didn’t care about the team being in the top position or bottom, they would just take 1-0 and go home.”
