Steve Barker; players have to do their homework!

The Stellenbosch football club coach, Steve Barker is pushing his players to keep practising at home. The team produced many good performances so far in the Premier Soccer League. It led them to a current 11th position. Stellies were stuck on the bottom at the beginning of the season – so this was huge improvement for them.

Their best performance was a 4-1 victory over Highlands Park. Stellies desperately needed a three-point lead to ease the plight at the wrong end of the league standings. The season started with many home defeats for them, starting from Bloemfontein Celtic to Bidvest Wits. Read more on soccer 10 today;

Steve Barker is happy with his team

“The 1-0 wins which have been happening lately at home have shown our great mentality and characteristics of being difficult to beat. Baroka FC, SuperSport United and Polokwane City could all see our tough side. Orlando Pirates found out that we are not joking after 1-0 victory at the Cape Town stadium. The best win of all was the 4-1 result we had against Highlands Park, played in November. We played it smart and took our chances well.” – Steve Barker said.

Barker made a target for his team which he plans to reach before the season ends. He wants to end the campaign with 33 points. It would be enough to survive the relegation and as things are now, a further six points are required to reach the mark. There are six more games they will play. Four of them will be held at the Danie Craven Stadium in Stellenbosch.

The back-to-back defeats against defending champions Mamelodi Sundowns and Maritzburg United didn’t help the team’s cause. However, there are still four home games ahead of them and the team needs to be more ready than ever.

“The Danie Crane Stadium is close to home for us. Our supporters will come in great numbers to cheer. It is a nice venue and it suits us.” – Barker added. The Stellebnosch football team is currently at home because of corona outbreak. The national pandemic is slowing everything down so the coach advised his players to stay active at home.
