Who are Kaizer Chiefs?

They are South Africa Football team that started their career in Johannesburg. The team is playing in the Premier Soccer League. This team got the nickname Amakhosi which means ‘chiefs’ or ‘lords’ in Zulu.

To point out, Zulu is a Southern Bantu language that is spoken in Southern Africa. It originates from the Nguni branch. It is one of the official languages of South Africa. Now that said, let’s get back to the subject.

Most of the home matches are played at Soccer City in Nasrec, Soweto which is also called First National Bank Stadium. At this point, they are among the most supported teams in the country.

The average attendance of their games at home is 14,873 which is highest in their league for 2018 and 2019. Together with Orlando Pirates (a team in which Kaizer Motaung, founder of KC, played in his early career), this team is a strong local rivalry.

Many famous players wore their black and gold jersey. For example, Shaun Bartlett, Steve Komphela, Siyabonga Nomvete and Doctor Khumalo. The others are Neil Tovey, Lucas Radebe and also Patrick Ntsoelengoe, Gary Bailey and the “Shoes Mosheu”.

At one point, Chiefs was banned from playing in the African club competitions by Confederation of African Football (CAF). Until 2009 they couldn’t play in the game. Reason for that was their abrupt withdrawal from CAF Confederation Cup in 2005.

In four years, this was the second time they have been penalised. It was because they refused to participate in the CAFs scheduled competitions. It is the most supported team in Africa with over 16 000 000 fans. Not to mention, they are the only club who has more than 50 trophies among the top three in Africa.

How much do you know about the team’s history? Let’s find out. The team was founded in January 1970. That was shortly after the team founder, Kaizer Motaung got back from the US. In the United States, he played as a striker for Atlanta’s Chiefs for the North American Soccer League.

The name of the team was a combination of his name and the Atlanta Chiefs. Clarence Mlokoti, China Ngema, Gilbert Sekgabi are people who had a direct influence on the formation of this team. Kaizer Chiefs are called Amakhosi by their fans. The headquarters of this team is in K. Chiefs Village which is located in Naturena, 6 kilometres south of Johannesburg.

In 200/2002 it was their most successful season and at the same time most tragic one. That year, they won four of five major trophies. To begin with, the Vodacom Challenge, the BP Top Eight, The Coca-Cola Cup and African Winners Cup.

At that point, the fans were going crazy over them. They were saying that they are on their operation to ‘take everything’. However, shortly after the Ellis Park Stadium Disaster took place. Not to mention, that was the worst sports accident in South African history.

The event resulted in 43 deaths when spectators poured on the Stadium and crushed them to death. After they won the African Cup Winners Cup they went to play in the CAF Champions League 2001. Later that year, they were chosen for the CAF Club Of The Year.

Orlando Pirates vs Kaizer Chiefs – Ellis Park Stadium Disaster

Every one of their games is an extremely tense event for their fans, especially on the home ground. For that reason, this was the worst sporting disaster that ever happened in South Africa. Above all, the stadium capacity was 60,000 but reports stated that additional 30,000 people tried to get in.

Not to mention, that the 120,000 fans were admitted to the stadium as well. At the same time, players of Orlando Pirates tried to see what is going on but they only caused a greater surge. In the middle of the accident, people were just falling over the fences into the press boxes.

As more people came in, many of them ended crushed to death. Untrained security guards were trying to settle down the situation with tear gas. That only made matters worse and caused even bigger chaos.

The cause of this accident was bribed security staff that let way too many people inside and poor control over the situation. The bodies were later laid out as the medical team examined them but all of them died on the spot.

A similar event happened again in the Oppenheimer Stadium in Orkney. It was about the same two teams playing, K. Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

The capacity of the Stadium was 23,000 but another 30,000 fans were let into the stadium and were not separated by their clubs.

Shortly after they entered the stadium, they started throwing cans and food at each other and at one point there was a knife attack. Other fans started a stampede in panic where 42 people got crushed to death against fences.

To begin with, the Amakhosi have used nine stations altogether in Johannesburg. That was mainly because they needed to constantly rotate between the stadiums. However, in 2006 the club decided to finally sign a ‘mutual interest agreement’ with a stadium developer.

Most importantly, that was a big strategic decision that could make a big difference. The construction of their new permanent home venue was planned with all the costs and in the end, it was R 1.2 billion or £ 105 million. The construction should have been partially owned by the club.

Not to mention, the stadium was called ‘The Amakhosi Stadium’. Location of the Stadium was to be in Krugersdorp which was around 40 kilometres from Johannesburg. At first, the plan was to open it in 2008 but according to the construction speed, it was to be expected in 2012.

The Stadium was later redesigned into a cheaper project which would worth around R 700 million. Not to mention, that reduced the capacity from 55,000 to 35,000. However, K. Chiefs later announced that they gave up on the idea to be partial owners.

They also stated that they will give full support to the owners and remain a committed Tennant. Above all, this new stadium was planned to be a great thing which could hold the ‘K. Chiefs Youth Development Programme’. After all, the Gauteng Government approved the project to develop the infrastructure to guarantee access to the stadium.

South African Premier Division

South African Premier Division is the South African highest division football league system. It is also known by the name Absa Premiership. In case you don’t know the results yet, let’s take a peek. To begin with, this is the association that is at the top level and is often referred to as PSL which is the league’s administrator.

To be exact, that is the Premier Soccer League. The Absa was founded back in 1996 after they agreed with the National Soccer League. Later the league was reduced from 18 to 16 teams which disbanded two teams; Free State Stars and Ria Stars.

In the year 2004, many scandals were going around while 40 people from the staff were arrested because of match-fixing. One year later, Chiefs successfully defended their league title after they won the trophy in 2004. Afterwards, Mamelodi Sundowns were the ones who took the trophy for the fourth time.

Shortly after, in 2007, Premier Soccer League signed a television deal worth R 1.6 billion. That took them right to the top 15 ranked leagues in the world in means of broadcasting. At the same time, ABSA replaces the sponsor name and turned it to Castle Lager. Not to mention, that in 2008 and 2009 hat- trick of titles was won by the SuperSport United.

Since 2019, this league is announced the 6th best league in entire Africa. Mamelodi Sundowns are the current champions and at the same time, they have the most titles won (9 altogether). Siyabonga Nomvethe is their current top goalscorer with 111 goals.

Latest Kaizer chiefs news

Without a doubt, you should be following the latest news about this club. Don’t take a chance to miss out on the latest events! At this point, the K. Chiefs confirmed the new signing. They confirmed the addition of the Yagan Sasman, the former Ajax Cape Town defender.

That is the fifth signing they had as the coach Ernst Middendorp want to strengthen the team before the new campaign. This 23-year-old player who left Ajax at the end of the season and joined Amakhosi managed to impress everyone to earn a three-year contract.

Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya and Happy Mashiane have all the best to say about Yagan Sasman who could also turn up as a left-winger. He was the Urban Warriors youth graduate who made his professional debut in the Absa Premiership in 2017. He managed to get a total of 16 appearances among the top competitions since that event.

Another in the latest news is the fact that Chiefs Coach ushes them to be more aggressive. While fans are used to this kind of game, quick one-twos and fastball circulation. But Ernst Midderndorp is not satisfied with that kind of game and wants to see more results.

Middendorp says that they were outmuscled way too many times during the last season and he doesn’t want it to happen again. Opponents are coming one-on-one against players, says Middendorp. Even though he did say that they have a certain style, he wants to take the quick-fast combinations and ball circulations out of the game.

The latest score

Chiefs ended in ninth place in the last season. First was the Mamelodi Sundowns. Chiefs started their 2018 with two wins against Polokwane and then Baroka but then came to two ties. However, they earned another win in Nedbank Cup against Golden Arrows.

Going back to Premier League, they won again against the Cape Town City but then they had a tie and loss against the Orlando Pirates. Premier League didn’t bring them much luck as the Nedbank Cup did where they kept winning.

In April of 20018, they had 3 wins and 2 losses in Premier League. They lost the game with Chippa Utd. And Golden Arrows. However, in the May they have beaten the Ajax Cape Town. After that, they had a tie with Mamelodi Sundowns. Afterwards, they lost the game against the Bidvest Wits. They didn’t have much luck even later where they managed to tie with Baroka and Maritzburg Utd.

They continued their path with a tie and loss. However, in September they finally had some luck. They won against Cape Town, Free Statue Stars and Amazulu. However, shortly after they tied with Highlands and lost against Polokwane. Orlando Pirates seemed to be their worst enemies in that season as they had another loss against them in a row.

Winning against Black Leopards returned them a little bit on track, tie with Chippa Utd. Wasn’t so bad but then again, came the pirates. They had another loss in a match against Orlando Pirates in Telkom Knockout. In World; club-friendly this year they lost 0-2 against Orlando Pirates. However, Cape Town City and Chippa Utd. can’t overpower them in any case.
