AmaZulu players were convinced that they can shock Kaizer Chiefs – and they were right. Ayanda Dlamini was the appointed caretaker-coach who stepped in after Jozef Vukusic got suspended. The club was stuck on the foot of the Absa Premiership. They had only seven matches to finish the season with no hope to move forwards.
The match with Amakhosi was his first task against the league leaders Chiefs at the FNB stadium. He vowed to do everything to help his team and he did, as AmaZulu surprised everyone with a 1-0 victory over Chiefs.
AmaZulu pulled off an unexpected victory
Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya returned to the starting line after a long time on the bench. Akumu Agay was also back in the game, which altogether proved as a good move. Chiefs’ coach Ernst Middendorp had put his faith in his team, except Williard Katsande and Kgotso Moleko who were not on the field. Daniel Akpeyi was once again sweating for Amakhosi, being between the sticks.
Reeve Frosler returned to the Chiefs defence but that didn’t save the team. Mulomowandau Mathoho and Daniel Cardoso went in their position as central defence while Nitya-Nitya took the left position.
The only goal of the game was a halftime attack of Bonginkosi Ntuli, in the 44th minute. Both teams took a cautious approach but Chiefs once again, underestimated the opponent. Chiefs created their best chance n the entire game in the 29th minute. Siphosakhe Ntiya-Ntiya sent a long clearance from the back which got into the centre circle, straight to Manyama. Leonardo Castro was on his way to the goal but struck the ball across and went wide of the goal.
Just one minute before break time, the visitors were already in lead. Siyethemba Sithebe sent a ball directly to Talent Chawapihwa who sent it across the field. The ball found Bongi Ntuli who managed to the net and help his team get the lead.
Kaizer Chiefs in the second half made a double substitution, replacing Baccus with Parker and Agay with Billiat. Khama Billiat looked like he had an impact but didn’t make enough for progress. Chiefs are still on the top of the log but their chances to reach the title are shrinking by every game.
