At the start of the game, Cavin Johnson and his fresh assistant, Alan Clark have set the Leopards in a compact midfield shape. They used the placers who could tuck inside to compete with the Chief’s expected selection. Thabo Matlaba took the first position. The other was taken by Mogokolodi Ngele. With this strategy, they had a good odds of controlling the midfield and the players got the ball 289 times in the first half alone. However, that has put Chiefs in a difficult position as they only had a chance to touch the ball 194 times.

Middendorp took his usual back four for this game. He was counting on his wingbacks to push forward and move the opposing defenders back into the defensive positions. His change to play with one player less than usual backfired as Leopards surprised him by not using wingers.

Amakhosi had difficulties in the first half

Amakhosi have constantly kept finding themselves in two or three situations to defend instead of one. Both Pentjie Zulu and Khuliso Mudau could get one forward into advanced positions to overthrow Chiefs. After that moment, there were some decent openings created from the third-man runs.

Middendorp is very decisive in correcting tactical problems within the team. At the half time, he replaced Yagan Sasman with Kearyn Baccus which returned the narrow midfield four who could control the game. In the second half, Chiefs managed to pull off 314 possessions of the ball while Leopards had 227. However, they still had a problem which was not creating enough openings.

Black Leopards were much better when challenging in the air. They conceded from a corner and Leonardo Castro came as a reason to be concerned. Khomotso Masia and Edwin Gyimah were both focused on clearing the danger, fighting hard against Amakhosi target man. They made 40 clearances, winning 13 duels. Chiefs lacked some creativity in the passing. Don’t forget about betway. They have amazing promotions which will get you a chance to win a big prize!
