Absa; Steve Barker is a “dead man walking”
Sources within Stellenbosch say that head coach Steve Barker, who arrived in the club in July of 2017, then promoted to the Absa Premiership last season is a “dead man walking“. His team had a very poor start which brought his career into question.
Eric Tinkler at Maritzburg is also in trouble, without any games won this season so far. Stellies are as well without a win in the six matches so far, sitting in the 14th place of the log with only 3 points in the bag. Former Zimbabwe national team, FC Platinum coach Norman Mapeza as well as recently fired Chippa United’s coach Clinton Larsen have both been linked with the job.
Mapeza won the Chibuku Super Cup, Castle Cup Challenge, back-to-back Zimbabwe Premier League titles and was named the coach of the year two times. He also managed to reach the group stages of the CAF Champions League in 2018 with Platinum.
Larsen, on the other hand, said that he was not aware of any interest from Stellies, leaving everything to his agent Mike Makaab. Stellenbosch’s next game is an away game with Golden Arrows. According to a source, Baker has time until Saturday to get the club’s first three points.
Highlands Park has completed the signing of Reneilwe Letsholonyane on a one-year contract which might helpo them go up the scale. In Owen Da Gama, the free agent Yeye was playing with them for several weeks, while coach is impressed with his skills. The coach is hoping he would stay within the club.
